Exploring Portsmouth's Naval Heritage

I recently found myself in Portsmouth, a city steeped in naval history and bustling maritime activity. My mission was twofold: to present at the 1710 Naval Air Station and to catch up on the latest innovations in Navy autonomous vehicles.

The journey from London was mercifully short, less than two hours by train, depositing me at Portsmouth Hard—a terminus conveniently nestled next to the ferry docks that whisk passengers across the water to Gosport and other destinations.

The photographs accompanying this account capture the essence of Portsmouth Hard. Adjacent to this area is Gunwharf, a vibrant shopping destination built on the grounds of the old HMS Vernon military site. It was here, in the early '80s, that I underwent seamanship training for petty officer—a nostalgic touchstone in my naval career.

Fortune favoured me with splendid weather; the skies were clear, enhancing both my visit and my photographs. The highlight of my trip was undoubtedly the presentation at the Royal Navy Portsmouth Dockyard. It felt like stepping back into a significant chapter of my life, reconnecting with a city that played a pivotal role in my naval journey.

Portsmouth is a city that wears its history proudly while pulsing with modern maritime energy. For anyone with an interest in naval heritage or simply seeking a vibrant coastal experience, it offers a wealth of sights and stories. In short, I highly recommend a visit.
